Greetings,

36 players came out to try and get their hands on another shiny trophy!

Some interesting Rules questions included -

1. A player has Reveillark and two 2/2 creatures in play when his opponent plays Damnation. Can he target the 2/2 creatures with Reveillark’s leave play ability when Damnation resolves?

Reveillark  4W
Creature - Elemental  4/3
Flying
When Reveillark leaves play, return up to two target creature cards with power 2 or less from your graveyard to play.
Evoke  5W (You may play this spell for its evoke cost. If you do, it's sacrificed when it comes into play.)

Answer:
Yes. Damnation resolves and all creatures go to the graveyard. The Reveillark leaves play ability triggers, but it has to wait until the active player would receive priority before it goes on the stack. When it does go on the stack, the player chooses targets and the creatures are already in the graveyard.

2. A player has a Blood Moon in Play and plays Auntie's Hovel. Can he reveal a goblin? If he does will the Hovel come into play tapped anyway?

Auntie's Hovel
Land
As Auntie's Hovel comes into play, you may reveal a Goblin card from your hand. If you don't, Auntie's Hovel comes into play tapped.
Tap: Add R or B to your mana pool.

Blood Moon  2R
Enchantment
Nonbasic lands are Mountains.

Answer:
The choice is made to reveal a goblin as the hovel comes into play, but it’s not in play yet – You don’t put it into play and then choose. Blood moon only affects permanents already in play. So the Hovel still has its ability when you choose. Choosing to reveal a goblin will stop the Hovel coming into play tapped.

3. A player has a Boggart Mob in play which is enchanted with an opponent’s Lignify. When the creature is destroyed, will the Boggart’s leave play ability trigger? Would your answer change if the creature enchanted with Lignify was Dread?

Lignify  1G

Tribal Enchantment - Treefolk Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature is a 0/4 Treefolk with no abilities.

Boggart Mob  3B
Creature - Goblin Warrior  5/5
Champion a Goblin (When this comes into play, sacrifice it unless you remove another Goblin you control from the game. When this leaves play, that card returns to play.)
Whenever a Goblin you control deals combat damage to a player, you may put a 1/1 black Goblin Rogue creature token into play.

Dread  3BBB
Creature - Elemental Incarnation  6/6
Fear
Whenever a creature deals damage to you, destroy it.
When Dread is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library.

Answer:
For abilities triggering when the creature leaves play, we have to look at the state of the creature while it was still in play. As such, the Boggart didn’t have any abilities because of Lignify and no creature will be returned to play by the champion ability.
However, the ability of Dread is not specifically triggering on leaving play, so the Dread ability on hitting the graveyard does trigger and it will be shuffled into the players library.

4. A player controls two Frogtosser Banneret and plays Earwig Squad, but how much will he pay?

Frogtosser Banneret  1B
Creature - Goblin Rogue  1/1
Haste
Goblin spells and Rogue spells you play cost 1 less to play.

Earwig Squad 3BB
Creature – Goblin Rogue 5/3
Prowl 2B
When Earwig Squad comes into play, if its prowl cost was paid, search target opponent’s library
for three cards and remove them from the game. Then that player shuffles his or her library.

Answer:
Assuming appropriate Goblin/Rogue damage has occurred, the C.R. 409.1b tells us to apply an alternative cost like Prowl. In 409.1f the rules then tell us to apply cost reductions, which with two Banneret’s will be accumulative and give a cost of ‘B’.

5.  A player swings for his attack with three 2/2 creatures. His opponent blocks one of them with two 1/1 tokens. In response the attacking player kills one of the tokens with Terror. They resolve combat damage and finish the turn. The opposing player draws his card for the turn and plays Mulldrifter. The Mulldrifter is still on the stack when they remember that there is a Painter’s servant in play (naming black). What do you do when called over and what are the penalties?

Terror  1B
Instant
Destroy target nonartifact, nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated.

Painter's Servant  2
Artifact Creature - Scarecrow  1/3
As Painter's Servant comes into play, choose a color.
All cards that aren't in play, spells, and permanents are the chosen color in addition to their other colors.

Answer:
The attacking player using Terror has committed a Game Play Error: Game Rule Violation and gets a warning (checking that he’s had no other GPE: Game rule violations today). However, the opponent shares some responsibility for maintaining the game state and gets a warning for Failure to Maintain Game State. We sometimes back up Game rule violations now, but not today. Too much has occurred. We’ve passed through three phases of one turn, gone into the the main phase of the next with a card draw and a new spell on the stack. A rewind would not be simple, so we leave the game state as is and get them to play on.
Ogre was on hand with some special deals for players -

The Semi Finals -

Joshua Hensley, Larry Waymon, James Wright and Alex Wennerberg.
Results -
Alex beat Joshua
Larry beats James

And then to the final

Larry "Crusher" Waymon vs Alex "Thunder "Wennerberg

In a tense final game, Alex looked in good shape with two Reveillark's in play and lots of goodies in his graveyard.

In a stunning move that changed the game, Larry Grandeurs while one of his Korlash, Heir to Blackblade is in play. Next turn he attacks with Korlash Alex blocks with a Reveillark, but Larry plays Sudden Spoiling and then destroys the second Reveillark with Terror.

With no leaves play trigger for the two Reveillarks, Alex runs out of ammunition quickly and is unable to cope with the massive Korlash and Larry swings for the win!

As always an excellent report, James. I enjoy your section on interesting rulings. You also do a nice job of mixing in the pictures.

For #5 (the painter's servant), what if the two players say that too much has passed and the judge has fixed it so they don't call a judge over, spectator does instead?

Hello,

I'm not sure I'm catching your meaning?

Do you mean to say the players come to an agreement themselves with their own fix and don't call a judge over?

James
